So things have seemingly gone silent. Yes, I must admit openly I have not sung so much since last year. I had a few shows coming my way, but I was so busy on the personal front, it was virtually impossible to accept those. To my credit there were about 6-7+ gigs I had to refuse. Regardless, I haven't sung in a few. 2012 will bring more performances surely and this is just a hibernating period.

On the musical front, minus the performing, I've started doing things that are definitely putting me on the right track. I will post some songs soon; the problem with having a good studio set up these days, is that every errant note and mistake is amplified. This makes for a great learning experience but not always for getting product out. Bear with me.

First, with the advent of 2012, I started my own music company called Moonlight Sonata Productions, Inc. I will elucidate you on what this company will do as the months roll by. There are certainly some amazing things coming up, which I cannot discuss on an open forum such as this as yet. Let's just say www.kaumudee.com is heading for a revamp!

Second, I have enrolled myself in Berklee College of Music's online school to strengthen my music business acumen. This is something I never thought I'd get a chance to do at such a point in my life - study further - but bit by bit it's coming together.

Third, I'm attending the 2012 NAMM Show in Anaheim. Will get to hang out with some musical heavyweights and soak it all in. So much of learning happens by osmosis; we don't realize that value at times. Plus this show is a great place to learn everything there is to learn about the Music biz. I'm attending seminar after seminar - not quite a musical experience in many ways, but keeping me close to what I love best. It's a full schedule.

Those are the updates in my musical life right now. I will update this site soon with some new material.

This song has a special place in my heart as it led to a huge change in my life, on the personal front. This song was something I just did on the fly to some extent, but it turned out ok, minus an errant note here and there. This was my first collaboration with Jayswami, who has created this track from scratch. He played all the instruments, mixed and polished this song into the creation that it is now. Thanks Jay! :)

Initially I resisted this film and this song quite a bit; the former because I just didn't think I could get on board with the theme (I was pleasantly surprised) and the latter because everyone seems to have gotten this track from Jay and worked on this song. I decided to put my name in the hat as well, finally. The end result was what you hear in this rendition. Thanks for listening!

For further information on Jay's music please see: Jay's Music

This is a live recording, so please forgive the mistakes. The talented artist who is on guitar and is singing with me is Subhen. I am very lucky to have met such a good consummate musician and I hope we continue to work together going forward.

Subhen has done some creative work on a couple of songs, namely Tere liye palkon ke jhaalar and Do lafzon ki. I wanted to post these up here since they are songs I love very much and luckily got a chance to perform in front of people. Please provide your feedback. Thank you.

Krishnapriya

Do Lafzon Ki Hain Dil Ki Kahaani

One of my all time favorite songs from The Great Gambler, this song has never ceased to lose it's freshness and beauty to my ears. I will make adjustments with other recordings.

After a 3 year hiatus, I decided to record something. I went on a marathon recording spree and the songs that I just loved to record turned out to have bad karaoke tracks. I'm now looking for a clean and smooth track for Tune O Rangeele from Kudrat.

Back to this song however, I have recorded a song that I shied away from for years. The thought of attempting drunkenness in a song, while tiptoeing over notes and maintaining hiccups and giggles, seemed overwhelming back then. Now, of course, it's a treat. I am sad that this track does not have the original starting of Aao Huzoor (Humse roshan hain chaand aur taare...) which truly is a test of a singer's fluidity of voice if balance of sur perfection and timing is maintained.

I have tried to ooze as much drunken appeal into this song as I could while sipping on saffron-scented chai; quite contrary to the many glasses of madira the actress and the singer seem to have imbibed to maintain the mist of intoxication in this song. Naturally Asha Bhosle is one gifted singer and does not require tea or alcohol to make her silky voice glide over this song. If we mortals could only sing like her, we'd all be quitting our day jobs.

In the song's prelude, an intoxicated Babita reminds her Krishna that if he breaks her heart, his Radha will never again be the same. Babita slithers over the dance floor with her gorgeous dress managing somehow to hold her balance while infuriating and taunting Biswajit with her song. I love the juxtaposition of Eastern morality versus Western influence, in this song, as is dramatized by the increasing disgust on the hero's face. It's funny how so much has changed and yet remains the same, from a cultural perspective. Please provide me with your feedback. Thank you!

Meera

KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-74869832371827093202010-05-11T18:48:00.000-07:002011-12-30T07:43:28.369-08:00Upcoming Show: Best of Laxmikant Pyarelal @ Cubberley Theatre, Palo Alto on May 15th, 2010<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 345px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_K_5ifcUujO8/S-oLviusrSI/AAAAAAAAGUQ/No75ybyUE5k/s400/LP.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470197608799317282" />

I'm part of an upcoming show which promises to be a treat for Laxmikant-Pyarelal fans. Growing up, I didn't appreciate them as much as I should have, mainly due to my RD Burman fixation, but really, they have created some of the freshest music that has spanned many decades. Appropriately utilizing the crystalline and immaculate voice of Lata Mangeshkar as their choice female vocalist for most songs, LP have truly explored many different genres of world music, ranging from jazz, disco, latin jazz and ultimately married them to homespun Hindustani classical, regional and even dhinchak street music.

The result of their musical toil was of course, complete innovation and unexpected genius. We have attempted to choose a sample of songs, which of course will not even scratch the surface of their incredible repertoire, since there really is so much to choose from. I'm in love with Chitra Singh's voice right now and just cannot get enough of her. Singing her songs is like tapping into a different part of my nature; no one can take my goddess' place, but Chitra Singh is unlike any other. Guess what, I have yet another cold right now - seems like nasal voices are perfectly suited to these type of renditions. There is no music, merely me and an assist from reverb. Pardon any mistakes please. Thank you.

The poetry is as follows:

Tumhare anjuman se uthke diwane kahaan jaate
Jo waabasta huye humse woh afsane kahaan jaate......

Tumhari berukhi ne laaj rakh li baadakhane ki
Tum aankhon se pila dete to paimane kahaan jaate
Jo waabasta huye humse woh afsane kahaan jaate......

Chalo achchha hua kaam aa gayi diwaangi apni
Wagar na hum zamaane bhar ko samjhaane kahaan jaate
Jo waabasta huye humse woh afsane kahaan jaate......

I have two more songs I will be recording soon. The words are pure tragic romance. I cannot resist; I must post the words for your eyes:

Aap ko bhool jaayen hum itne to bewafaa nahin
Aap se kya gila kare aap se koi gila nahin

Sheesha-e-dil ko todna unka to ek khel hain
Humse hi bhool ho gayee unko koi khata nahin

Kaash wo apne gham mujhe dede to kuch sukoon mile
Woh kitna bad-naseeb hain gham hee jise mila nahin

Jurm hain gar wafa to kya, kyoon kar wafa ko chhod doon
Kehte hain is gunaah ki hoti koi saza nahin

This is one of my favorite ghazals by Chitra Singh. Her voice has minute shards of heartbreak woven through it, making your own eyes glisten with unsuppressed feeling. This was recorded at the same time as that last ghazal and yes I was deathly ill here as well. I promise I will put up stuff that's not tainted with a cold for once. This is my broken voice and Abhijit's melody....We were both feeling around the melody; me trying to guide my broken voice and Abhijit trying to follow the chords. I have to do my own crisp recording soon, one with a good song that is contemporary for once....

Natasha

KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-53417484382535797772009-02-17T21:40:00.000-08:002009-02-17T21:50:56.285-08:00Upcoming Concert on March 8th: India Literacy Project presents ILP Fest 2009
Hello friends,

I'm very happy to share this event with you; it's a show my band Jigary is doing for the India Literacy Project on March 8th. We are super happy to be able to help out with such a worthy cause, but we cannot do this without your help. Jigary's prime passions are it's friendships, it's music and it's charitable causes. In doing this show we are able to enjoy all three.

I realize you guys come out to support me for several concerts and I appreciate that. I'm urging you to come out for this show as well; it's a labor of love for our band. We have toiled for months on this material and have worked on minute details of each and every song. Please come out and support this wonderful cause and enjoy the show. You won't be able to resist tapping your feet. We promise not to disappoint.

Tickets are available at the following link: PLEASE BUY TICKETS HERE!

Best wishes,
KaumudeeKThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-24841068724501207342008-11-29T23:31:00.000-08:002008-12-05T11:20:27.847-08:00Aisa Lagta Hain - Echoes

Recently I did a very intimate concert at a friend's house. My generous friends hosted a bunch of strangers at their house, first during practices and then for the actual concert itself. As the weeks went on, we became close friends and now this musical journey seeks to be continued on. The theme was the songs of Sachin Dev Burman and I sang some pretty gems like Gaata Rahe Mera Dil, Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahaan Mein, Shokhiyon Mein Ghola Jaaye, Najar Laagi Raja, Deewana Mastana Hua Dil and Raat Akeli Hain. I will try to put up some version of this show on this blog. Here is the intro from the show:

Introduction to the SD Burman show

My musical compadres and I thoroughly enjoyed not only the practice sessions but also the actual concert, performed for a houseful of music lovers. The event was by invite only and only open to a small group since the concert was being held at home yet the creative yield for me and the rest of the performers was tremendous. Naturally, my voice gave out by me getting sick one week before the show (thanks Murali) and I had to somehow manage singing through the pain. The rest of the artists were so kind and caring of me, that they all decided to also get sick ;) The result was a fabulous show with a few moments of voices giving out. Mostly mine.

Well a few days after, it was still not in good shape. Yet at the request of some elders, I sang some ghazals in a home setting. A recording was made and I am actually shocked that it came out decently. This particular song is by Chitra Singh and is one of my most favorite ghazals. I have lost sur here and there, and I am aware of that. My voice dried out and I could just not get some notes out as well. I was so sick that I couldn't even sing a note till the day of the show, but somehow things managed to happen. Normally I don't put up such recordings, but I just thought it was not too shabby considering the state of my voice. Abhijit is a genius on the keyboards and I'm on vocals. That's it. The link to the recorded song is below in the player; tell me what you think.

Froggy Throat

KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-34428828070555342552008-08-04T18:42:00.000-07:002008-08-04T21:14:20.355-07:00RD Burman show in Sunnyvale, California on August 23rd, 2008<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_K_5ifcUujO8/SJfGIPUtW8I/AAAAAAAADPo/YHjTnFQiiF0/s400/RDBflyer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230867337068764098" />

Come one, come all....

I am finally getting to do the songs of Pancham Da, a music director that has been close to my heart since I was a teenage girl. From the fast-paced songs of Teesri Manzil to the gentle melodies of Aandhi, to the laughs of Padosan and the tears of Amar Prem, this show covers some of the best work Pancham Da ever created. I am honored to be able to work on some wonderful songs that my goddess (Asha Tai) has sung like the flow of a crisp brook of melodious notes...Needless to say, I am charmed with the content of the show as well as the chance to sing my idol's best work. I hope I do it justice.

Please join us and prepare to hear some of the most amazing musicians put their talents together to weave the musical history of Pancham Da's finest creations. In April I did a cool concert with a local band named Eastern Winds based on the works of A.R.Rahman. I got some exciting song choices that challenged my voice quite a bit (and especially because I got horribly sick the week prior and lost my voice). Still, the music prevailed and somehow I was able to croak out some 'tunes' much to my own amazement. I'm now taking a still break but I have some wonderful musical plans that I'm cooking up. I realize I have not posted a song in ages but that's about to change. I'm planning an experiment which shall be posted on here over the next month or so. So please stay tuned.

Most importantly, I want to speak with you all about a cause that is very dear to me. Recently a dear friend's family member had a tragic happening take him away temporarily from his beloved wife and newborn infant daughter. He is hanging from a thread and just hearing about this will make tears come to your eyes. Anand is now in a coma thanks to a cruel twist of fate and the VSNA community of the Bay Area is raising funds to assist his family pay for the huge medical expenses spent in keeping up with the treatments.

To the rescue came Siva, an up and coming little-known percussionist who performs with some music director in India :-) Jokes aside, the great Sivamani is doing a benefit concert that will assist in raising funds for Anand. The goal is to continue the treatments and reunite Anand with his wife and little daughter. Please check out the following website that has all the pertinent information and come out to see Siva do his master work. Anand and all his loved ones would be very grateful.

The website will have the pertinent information but I am including all that in this blog post as well:

A.SIVAMANI Musical Concert - Taal & Time

Featuring:
Anandan Sivamani (Prince of Percussion)
Shriram Brahmanandan (Mridangam)
Mahesh Kale (Hindustani Vocals)
Jeanette Harris (Saxophone)

For more info, Please visit:
Taal-N-Time

When?
Saturday, July 5th, 2008
Promptly from 8:30 PM to 11:00 PM

Where? After a huge musical high, starting with mid June to mid November, things have slowed down considerably. I think I can have a life during this time and work on things that are important. I wish to restart my music lessons, which I have been unable to do but have done a lot of voice exercises seeing that we had so many shows over the last few months.

Thoroughly enjoyed singing all the same old same old songs and now am looking forward to singing a fresh batch. Enough of the old. We singers get bored too. The band has dispersed for the holidays. Hibernation. Many members are in India and will return near February or so. I guess we need to start waking up around that time.

I have no musical news for you. Have heard some nice tunes here and there and I am making a list. Beyond that there is..............

the Silence.

Best wishes for the new year,
Moonlight SonataKThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-31785384618354204712007-11-14T13:09:00.000-08:002007-12-10T19:19:39.214-08:00The Great Sivamani<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_K_5ifcUujO8/R14Bf-aT7mI/AAAAAAAAAew/TG5AhbLiAVs/s400/jigary.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142549473344613986" />
Soooo...about last last week....I ran into a thunderstorm called Sivamani. The musicians are amazing; it's been years since I have performed with such a solid group and it humbles me. Makes one want to do better and better. There are dances, poetry recitations and the live band (us). The song selection is amazing. Something for the Palo Alto pseudo-cool Bhangra loving crew as well as for the die-hard Gulzar worshippers. The latter know the songs from Aandhi, Golmaal, Ijaazat, Bandini, to name a few, like the back of their hand. I have never been part of the formerly mentioned "cool" crew, so my delight over the newer songs is lesser; just give me my Gulzar poems like water droplets on a tender green shoot in the monsoons....I seep it up.

Chhotisi kahaani se....

The only thing missing in this show is the amazing Gulzar himself....That would be sone pe suhaga in terms of this show.

Have some changes happening in my personal life and those have been keeping me busy. I will announce the necessary information, when things start crystallizing. The changes don't have anything to do with music, so I refrain from posting on this blog as yet.

Thank you for your continued support......

~AnandagandhaKThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-74261276324607030012007-08-15T20:04:00.000-07:002007-09-16T12:57:38.068-07:00The latest.....<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_K_5ifcUujO8/Ru2KXXx_L7I/AAAAAAAAAUw/iEqJcTVM5Kg/s400/raat_chaand_gulzar.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110893286260682674" />

You know that old adage; that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I loved this saying and frankly I used to live by it. Then you realize that it's just a sham and what it should be is: that which doesn't kill you makes you think you're not dead and reborn over and over and over again. Knowing my weird penchant for privacy, I may not even post this post until I'm out of it. All I know is, everything is currently a whirlwind. I'm getting more offers to perform now than I have ever received in the past and regrettably I just have no time to even attend rehearsals.

A show recently came up though; luckily AFTER August (Jupiter Retrograde, you kill me) and is allowing me to finally explore the works of one of the loves of my life: GULZAR. The excellent Asha Bhosle sings the poetry of Shahryar set to the melody of Khaiyyam, thus giving voice to Rekha's exquisite persona in Muzaffar Ali's 1982 artpiece, Umrao Jaan. The winsome tawaif, Umrao Jaan, coquettishly welcomes Nawab Sultan, one of her many admirers, who, as the film progresses, becomes the love of her life.

This is one of my favorite films and to this date no one has been able to recreate the delicate nuances of Rekha's acting and Ali's direction. Add to it a perfectly created set, genuine Urdu dialogue and costumes that would make the begums of Lucknow swoon, Umrao Jaan, the film captured many hearts and audiences. The music is exquisitely timeless; though attempts have been made to copy it's essence, to those that are true worshippers of ghazal gayaki and Urdu shaayri, Ali's Umrao Jaan will forever be a masterpiece to be untouched by any other.

Nearly 13 years ago, a song from this film launched my humble musical career; years later I revisit it as an homage to my roots. I offer at your feet my simple song.

~ Rasika

KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-22884235316768431902007-02-04T14:06:00.000-08:002007-02-04T21:07:25.512-08:00The overwhelmed heart....<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_K_5ifcUujO8/RcZcKpbNCuI/AAAAAAAAAAc/Xw-ynSqJjIE/s200/mirabai.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5027807371994139362" />
So thanks to a new friend I made via the Internet, I got the chance to feel the first bit of bliss that I have not felt in nearly 10 years. I had the chance to jam with a group of equally passionate musical minds who worship music and who are open and understanding to flaws of vocal chords that have the remnants of cobwebs on them.

My new friend, a talented musician in his own right, invited me to a jam session which went into the wee hours of the morning. I was exhausted and running on very little sleep from the previous night but the continual proverbial "musical drip" coursing through my veins, did not allow sleep to steal my eyes. My ears absorbed in melodies that I had not heard for years, bringing out memories and thoughts of the best times of my life. My friend is a dedicated, talented keyboardist and also a hidden singer that is now attempting to sing as well. Suffice it to say, I give him two thumb's up for starters and a "wooooohooooooooo" for good measure.

All that singin' sure inspired me. I have been using music as a healer lately; yes I know it is cliched since that's the obvious medicine for tough times, but it's something I'm actively practicing now. Music has healed so much and it promises so much more.......

I'm choosing the floral arrangements of notes as we speak to get some more recordings done...............

MohanaKThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-83057192119580100512006-11-24T22:59:00.000-08:002006-11-24T23:06:56.367-08:00Mera Kuch Saamaan - Ijaazat
This song is too dear to my heart - I fell in love with all the songs from Ijaazat, growing up as a teenager in Toronto. I had newly discovered the genius of Gulzar and I was obssessed with learning about every song he had ever written. For me this was post-discovery of the phenomenon called R.D. Burman, and I drank in the film with my eyes, to absorb every element of it. The combination of R.D. Burman and Gulzar remains as my absolute favorites, and this film's soundtrack is the perfect harmony of both their talents.

The seriousness of the film's theme escaped me at the time, but the impact of the lyrics and the beautiful composition remained etched on my soul....This song is a request for a return of the mementos and memories that went along with a very emotional relationship. Sung by none other than Asha Bhosle, Anuradha Patel emotes this tender reminder to Naseeruddin Shah's character. One of Gulzar's finest songs, I have forever wanted to sing this. I offer my humble presentation to you......

Maya

KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30536157.post-76304053924964044752006-11-24T12:10:00.000-08:002007-07-26T22:28:34.455-07:00O Sajna Barkha Bahar Aayi - Parakh
Based on Raga Khamaj, Salil Chaudhary's musical genius is perfectly showcased in Lata Mangeshkar's rendering of this song from the Hindi film Parakh. The lovely Sadhana sweetly sings as the rain pours down outside her home...Smiling shyly she lets us view the pouring rain through her soft eyes and we too start swaying to thoughts of love and the romance of the monsoon....

Lata Mangeshkar has also sung this lovely song in Bengali, which is titled "Na jeo na" and became a huge Bengali film song hit. Salil Da has retained the same romantic soft mood in both songs. The mixing on this recording is my own attempt, as was the song before, so please give me your genuine feedback so that I may improve my work - both in singing and mixing. Thank you.....

Indrani....

I will update this song here once I've re-recorded it. I am not satisfied with it. Thank you.KThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01887109647478910557noreply@blogger.com6
